FINANCIAL ADVISOR FAQS

Common questions about working with a financial advisor in New Zealand.

What is a financial advisor and how can they help me?

A financial advisor offers personalised advice on everything from mortgages and investments to insurance broker support, KiwiSaver, and budgeting. We compare more than 20 banks and lenders to find the best deal tailored for you. We help you understand your money, make a plan, so you can reach your financial goals with more confidence and less stress.

How do I choose the best financial advisor for me?

Look for licensed advisors (like us!) with New Zealand expertise, transparent fees, and a client-first approach focused on clear, jargon-free guidance. Choose a registered advisor under NZ's Financial Service Providers Register, such as Good Money Limited.

What services can I expect from a financial advisor?

Services include home loan advice, mortgage refinancing, investment planning, insurance reviews (including health insurance and life insurance), business and asset finance, KiwiSaver, debt management, and ongoing financial planning. A financial advisor is a trained professional who helps you understand your money, make a plan, and choose strategies and products to reach your financial goals (like buying a home, investing, or retiring comfortably).

How do financial advisors charge?

Fees vary from fixed rates to a percentage of assets managed; all costs are disclosed upfront. In most cases, lender commissions cover costs with no direct charge to you.

Where do financial advisors source their loans from?

We source loans from leading finance companies in NZ. These include ANZ, Westpac, BNZ, ASB, Heartland Bank, SBS Bank, Liberty Financial, RESIMAC, and more.

What should I bring to my first meeting?

For a first meeting, bring anything that helps your advisor see your full money picture and a clear list of your goals and questions. You don’t need it to be perfect, but more detail, will mean more useful advice. Income, expenses, assets, debts, and any insurance or investment statements will help us create a tailored plan, made for you.

Will my financial advisor manage my investments?

Your financial advisor can manage your investments, but only if that’s a service they specifically offer and you agree to it in the documents you sign (it’s not automatic for every advisor).

How often do I meet my financial advisor?

Most people meet their financial advisor at least once a year for a full review, with extra catch‑ups (often quarterly or when things change) if their situation is more complex.

Is financial advice regulated in New Zealand?

Yes, financial advice is regulated in New Zealand, and advisers must meet licensing, conduct, and competence standards set out in law and a professional code of conduct. Good Money and its advisors operate under the Financial Markets Conduct Act.

How do I know if my financial advisor is right for me?

You’ll know a financial advisor is right for you when they are properly licensed, you understand and trust their advice, their fees are clear, and you feel listened to and on track toward your goals.
